The executive of the Sierra Leone Association of Alberta (SLAA) led by Dr. Abu Conteh (pictured), has been organizing various workshops involving the various community groups to help create awareness in the Sierra Leone community in Alberta.

On Saturday, August 12, 2023, the association held its 2023 Board Orientation Workshop at the association's community multipurpose centre at 17218 107 Ave. NW, Edmonton,  AB.

The workshop is a part of an SBCCI funded capacity building grant project.  The workshop covered best practice in board governance. A couple of past community presidents shared their experience with current board members. Points covered include what worked well for them during their term of office as presidents, their challenges and how they addressed them, and what they would do differently if they have to serve again. Similarly, continuing board members shared their experience garnered so far with members who are new to the board.

Meanwhile,  the second in this series of five capacity building workshops organized by the SLAA executive will take place this Saturday August 26, 2023 at the Mezannine Floor of our SLAA Community Multi-purpose Centre, starting at 11:00 am. This session will be for our SLAA Strategic Planning (Part 1). Participants will be the Executive Committee and Heads of  Community Sub-groups.

According to executive members, the workshop is to create greater awareness of the association's aims and ideals and to ensure members of the various groups are involved in the association's activities.

The workshops have drawn together the association's former presidents, Mr. Augustine Marah and Mr. Kemoh Mansaray, while one of the facilitator is Mr. John Gaye, former president of the Liberian Friendship Society in Edmonton.
