Help for a Sierra Leonean man in Winnipeg, Canada

By SALNAM Secretariat, Winnipeg, Canada. August 2, 2024.

Dear Community Members,

I hope this email finds you well.

A Sierra Leonean man by the name of Mr. Kabbah arrived in Winnipeg in August of 2023, exactly a year from now, running from a specific situation in Sierra Leone and seeking asylum in this country has found himself in an unbelievably tough situation.

Just after two months of arriving in Winnipeg, he got seriously sick and was diagnosed with ruptured kidneys (both kidneys) and multiple brain strokes.

After been admitted at the HSC for eight months, his current hospital bill is over $1.4M but that bill is the least of his problems.

For three months at the HSC, he was unable to speak, walk or eat. He was on life support at the HSC intensive care unit for six straight weeks.

He has recovered and is off dialysis, but he has to struggle and deal with his brain damage which has caused him lots of memory loss and inability to function with daily tasks as before.

The federal government of Canada has been involved in his case but there is only this much they can do. He is no longer in the hospital, and they have put him in an assisted living home. He struggles with daily tasks, even to dial a number from the land line phone in his suite is impossible.

In his one-bedroom suite, he needs basic things like toiletries, food, clothing, pocket money. He told me he needs a smart phone where he can just do voice commands to make calls since he cannot function properly to use analog phone.

He is asking the Sierra Leone community in Winnipeg, SALNAM and other agencies to help him.

Mr. Kabbah is a graduate from Fourah Bay College with a master’s degree in data management, he worked all the time in Sierra Leone until he decided to come seek asylum in a safer place for personal reasons.

He is a fervent Christian, married back home with three little children.

Mr. Kabbah is 46yrs old. His refugee case is currently under review with immigration Canada.
