Freetown, Sierra Leone. September 27, 2023
Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, David Moinina Sengeh held a successful discussion with the main opposition All Peoople’s Congress (APC) Samura Kamara at US Ambassador’s residence.
“I spent a solid 10+ minutes talking to Dr. Samura Kamara (the presidential candidate of the opposition party APC) one on one,” the Chief Minister revealed.
Sengeh said their discussion was centred on diplomacy, dislike for bad governance and the urgent need for dialogue.
“I assured him that we will engage with open minds, and open hearts to move our country forward,” he said.
He also stated that both him and Samura Kamara agreed on diplomacy to be “at the core” of their engagement.
Sierra Leone is currently witnessing a political impasse between the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the main opposition APC. The APC is having disagreement over results announced in the 2023 General Elections.
The opposition party is claiming that there were statistical inconsistencies in the results announced by the country’s Electoral Commission. After calls for the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) to release data by polling stations fail, the opposition party announced a boycott of governance.
Meanwhile, the international community has called for dialogue to ameliorate the issue as elected APC Members of Parliament, Mayors and District Council Chairpersons continue to adhere to a dossier signed on the boycott.
